Deputy John Mariano

In 1965, Deputy Mariano began his police career in the military as a Military Police Officer. In 1967, he joined the West Haven Police Department, in Connecticut, as a Grade “B” Patrolman.

West Haven is a coastal city of approximately 70,000 residents and a geographical area of less then 10 square miles. West Haven borders the city of New Haven and has 150 sworn officers.

During the next 25 years with the West Haven Police Department, Deputy Mariano rose through the ranks from Patrol Officer to Chief of Detectives and finally Deputy Chief of Police. He commanded a 20 man S.W.A.T Team for 15 years. In 1976 he was the recipient of the “Survivors Club Award” after an incident in which he was saved by a “Second Chance” bullet proof vest. He was awarded Police Officer of the Year in 1984 by the Connecticut General Assembly.

In addition to serving as a Windham County Deputy Sheriff, Deputy Mariano also served with the New Hampshire Marine Patrol for approximately 5 years.

Deputy Mariano received his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice and Master’s Degree in Public Administration, both from the University of New Haven in Connecticut.
